Today's Review: Play Day Expressions Oceans Adventure aka Sluban M38-B0867 Girls Dream Yacht

Hi there alt Lego fans!  Today, I'll be reviewing the Sluban M38-B0867 Girls Dream Yacht set being sold as the Walmart Play Day Expressions Oceans Adventure.  It's not a copy of any Lego set.

I found this set on clearance in the Walmart toy aisle for around $14 Cdn.  According to the box it has 301 pieces and is compatible with other leading brands.  I'm guessing that this set should have a retail price of around $25 Cdn or so.

On the side of the box flap is the set number which has the Sluban set code of M38-B0867.  A quick google search reveals that the set is called Girls Dream Yacht. I tried to find the Sluban set on Amazon, but it's not currently available for sale.  I did find it on Aliexpress in the Puzzles and Toys store.

The box is bigger than it needs to be as there are only a few bags of parts inside.

The building block set unboxed consists of 5 bags of parts, an instruction booklet and sticker sheet.

The sticker sheet confirms that this is really the Sluban M38-B0867 set. I think I shall save the stickers for another day.

Parts dump!  Mostly white bricks with a smattering of blue and yellow pieces.

Sluban minifigures are not compatible with Lego style figures. However they still have a certain charm about them, so I think I will keep them on a go forward basis. I used to have a lot of Sluban minifigures but now regret having giving them all away.

Oh, by the way,  the minifigs come unassembled, so you have to put them together yourself.

The 30 page instruction booklet has large, clear and colourful instructions.

Building the set is easy and straightforward, great for the kids.  No clutch issues but I did notice that some of my bricks were dirty, as was one of the minifigure's hair piece.

The yacht is double hulled and can seat one figure to operate the craft.  In behind there is another lounge area.  The roof is removable in two pieces, one for the sail and another for the upper seating section.

There's just a few brick pieces that are pink in colour. Would you keep the pink pieces or remove them?  Let me know which way looks better in the comments below.

The sail mast and attachment to the roof is constructed from technic pieces.  The very tall sail itself is made of a very thin piece of plastic.  I'm probably wanting to replace the sail with a sheet of white paper.

Here's the starboard side view of the yacht.   Forgot to mention that the upper seating area has two seats and table.  Someone forgot to throw away the leftover coffee cup! There are a total of four life preservers on the boat.

Aft view of the boat.  This boat's not going anywhere because there's no motors included!

Forward view of the double hull.

So, I'm not sure if having an electric guitar on the water is a wise choice.  An acoustic guitar would have been a much better accessory.

Speaking of accessories, you get a paddleboard, some flippers and a blue dolphin in addition to the guitar.

These were the leftover parts after building the dream yacht.  The hearts are supposed to be attached to the boat, I left them off.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures of the Sluban M38-B0867 Girls Dream Yacht / Walmart Play Day Expressions Ocean Adventure!

If Sluban mini figures don't do it for you, here's a bonus shot of some Lego style nautical figures with the boat.  Welcome aboard!

I'm giving this set 4.7 out of 5,  If it wasn't for the dirty bricks and the lack of propulsion, this set would have gotten a perfect score for build and play value.  I'm actually glad that there were stickers instead of printed parts on this set, because I could leave them off, along with the pink pieces and make the boat a bit more gender neutral.  I think this boat would look pretty nice in a city layout harbour.

As I mentioned earlier, this set was clearanced at my Walmart and is no longer available.  .   What are your thoughts on this set?  Love it or leave it?  Let me know!   Bye for now.

Not Lego City Bus MOC, originally Sluban

Hmm, I wonder when the bus is going to show up today?

It finally came!  It's a new bus for Its-Not-Lego town. I made this one based on the design of the Sluban city bus model M38-B0330, which is also part of my brick collection.  Except that I used different building block pieces from my parts stash to create this bus, not just Sluban bricks.

I might need to make a sticker to show a route name on the front of the bus.  The front of the bus has lots of details like the mirrors, and the streamlined front grill with headlights and turn signals.

The back of the bus has taillights and a license plate.

It was easier for me to put the door in the middle of the bus than to put it up front.

The door in it's open position.

The roof of the bus comes off in panels.  Here's how it looks inside.  There's only enough room for three seats plus the bus driver.  Might be standing room only during rush hour.

I like that the windows are tinted on the bus.

I've ordered the Sluban double decker bus, which I'll compare to my own when I get it.

So this will be the fourth bus in my town collection.  Here's a list of the busses I have so far:

Fake Friends Minifigures Review

I've bought a few bootleg Friends building sets in the past, primarily to use the bricks and accessories for my MOC sets.  Over time, I've acquired a few of the Friends minifigures from different bootleg brands such as Bela, Sheng Yuan (SY), and Lepin.  I prefer to use Lego style minifigs in my displays, so these ones all get tossed into a plastic bag.

If you're wondering why they are all bald, it's because their hairpieces are actually compatible with the Lego minifigure heads.  The majority of the Friends style minifigs are female, but there are about two or three male minifigs.  In terms of uniqueness, almost all of them have their own outfit, I think there's only one or two that are duplicates.  Also the faces of the friends minifigures have some variations in facial features and eye colours too.

Here is a list of the sets where the Friends style minifigs come from:

  • Bela 10169 Pet Hospital
  • Bela 10162 Cafe
  • Bela 10541 Emma's House
  • Bela 10403 Recording Studio
  • Lepin 01007 Hotdog Van
  • Lepin 01011 Pizzeria
  • SY Pop Star

Stored away in the same bag, are the Sluban style of minifigures, also not compatible with the Lego style.  While most of them are male, there are a few female minifigs in the Sluban line-up as well.  I figured I might as well take pictures of them too, since I have them out.

A lot of the Sluban minifigures come from the construction series, that's why there' so many of them in overalls.  A lot of them came with red hardhats, and fortunately, they will fit on a Lego style minifigure head.  The hairpieces aren't that great but they do kind of fit also.  That's why these ones are bald too.  If you look closely, they do have some unique looking faces.

Here's a list of the Sluban sets where these minifigs come from:

  • M38-B0516 (City series) Girl at Mailbox
  • M38-B0565 (City series) Hotdog Cart
  • M38-B0563 (City series) Courier
  • M38-B0523 (City Series) Camper
  • M38-B0551 (Construction series) Excavator
  • M38-B0539 (Construction series) Steam Roller
  • M38-B0555 (Construction series) Tower Crane
  • M38-B0552 (Construction series) Dump Truck
  • M38-B0550 (Construction series) Cement Mixer

So do you collect Friends style minifigures and do you ever mix the alternate brands with the Lego stlye minifigures?

Sluban's Hot Dog Cart Building Block Set Review M38-B0565

Hi there, brick fans! I saw this little building block set back in 2016 and thought it might be a nice addition to my modular town. This Hotdog Cart is made by Sluban for its series Town Business Street. The set number is M38-B0565 and it contains 112 pieces.

The instructions for the Sluban Hot dog cart comes on a single two sided page.  This is the first side.

Here's the second part of the instructions.

The hot dog cart set comes in two separate bags.  There's no stickers that come with this set.

These are the Hot dog cart building block pieces removed from their bags.

Sluban mini figures are made differently than Lego mini figures so they aren't compatible at all.

Here's a comparison of the Sluban mini figure versus a Lego compatible mini figure.  The Sluban mini figure actually has more mobility than Lego.  It's head can tilt side to side and it's hands can rotate in different directions.  The torso can also turn left and right.

This Sluban set consists of one mini figure, a red scooter and a hot dog cart with an assortment of foods.  Despite it being a hot dog cart, the only things sold are buns and sandwiches.  There 2 green beverage bottles too.

The scooter can attach and detach from the the cart.  The cart carries two goblets and has tables that flip up on either side for serving food.

Here's the back view, but I'm not sure what the attachments are supposed to be.  To the right of the cart, you can see that you get a lot of extra parts that are leftover from the build.

You get two sandwiches and a large assortment of buns.

Our vendor mini figure has setup his hot dog on a busy street in town.   But he doesn't look too happy that nobody wants to buy his sandwich.

This set only cost me about $2 back in 2016, but now seven years later is costs $7 CDN.  Do you think it's still worth it?   Let me know!
